Joseph Stewart Horrigan was the founding partner of what today is known as Horrigan Goehrs Edwards & Culp, LLP. Joe founded the firm in 1986 as Horrigan & Associates and it later became Horrigan & Goehrs, before it took on the name it has today. Joe was born on the 22nd of November, 1938 in Houston, Texas to Ruth Mize Horrigan and Joseph Raymond Horrigan. He passed away at his home on the 28th of July at age 78. He is survived by his daughters, Elizabeth Martin, Katherine Quie, Erin Savage; his six grandchildren Tristan and Celeste Martin, William and Emma Quie and Lauren and Faye Savage.
Joe was a lifelong resident of Houston. He attended St. Anne’s Elementary School and graduated from the Kinkaid School in 1957. He received a B.A. from Duke University in 1961 and received his Doctor of Jurisprudence from the University of Texas in 1964. He was a law clerk for the U.S. District Court of Appeals and U.S. Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals for Judge Homer Thornberry.
Joe was a well-known probate attorney and expert in his field. He was a Fellow of the American College of Trust & Estate Counsel, member of the American, Texas & Houston Bar Associations, Board Certified in Probate & Estate Planning by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization and was a frequent author and speaker for continuing legal education programs. He was awarded the Houston Bar Association’s Lifetime Achievement Award by the Probate, Trusts and Estate Section in recognition for his distinguished service to the Bar in 2010. He was also designated as a “Texas Super Lawyer” by Texas Monthly Magazine.
